Premethrin
Permethrin 1% is a synthetic pyrethroid that is used as a lotion or shampoo, once applied it will block the sodium channels in the head lice. Because of its toxic effect it is not recommended in pregnancy. Some side effects would include irritation of the scalp but this is rare.

Before the application of this product the hair should be washed with a mild shampoo and dried. Once the hair is dried, apply enough product to coat the hair. Premethrin 1% should be left on the head for 10 minutes before rinsing it off thoroughly with water. For a more accurate style of treatment it is best to not only wet comb the hair after 2 days to remove the nits but to apply the medication after 7 days to decrease the chance of getting the infestation again, as the louse cycle is approximately 17 days another round of treatment will usually destroy the louse that survived the first application.
